Boxer Anthony Joshua awarded OBE, Order of the British Empire

Last Thursday December 20, 2018, British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was presented with an OBE for his services to sport, by the Prince of Wales.

OBE which stands for “Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire”, is a Queen’s honour given to an individual for a major local role in any activity such as business, charity or the public sector.

Anthony Joshua who has Nigerian roots, won an Olympic gold medal at London 2012 and is the current IBF, WBO and WBA heavyweight world champion. He has fought 22 fights and won all, with all but one coming by way of knockouts.

Anthony Joshua was born in Watford to a Nigerian mother and a British father of Nigerian and Irish descent. He has lived some parts of his life in Nigeria until his boxing debut in 2013.

Joshua said: “boxing provides opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds (…) In boxing you meet people, you inspire them and they do the same. You never know where it could take someone. That’s important.”

Joshua expressed his desire to take on Wilder at Wembley on April 13. For him, it’s important to fight him within the next 12 months, so he “can have a chance of becoming undisputed champion”.
