Netflix will debut its first African original in 2019: Queen Sono
Streaming giant Netflix announced on Monday that it will launch, in 2019, it’s first original series made in Africa: Queen Sono
Queen Sono is a thrilling story about a kickass female secret agent who fights crime while dealing with crises in her personal life. The series which is set in South Africa, will star Quantico actress Pearl Thusi.
The show which will center on a complex, diverse female character, in line with other Netflix shows like Jessica Jones, will be executively produced by Tamsin Andersson and directed by Kagiso Lediga, the same team behind the Netflix original film Catching Feelings, which is also set in South Africa and stars Thusi.
CCatching Feelings, is a dark romantic comedy about a young couple whose lives are turned upside-down when a celebrated older writer moves in with them.
Netflix is now trying to cater to African audiences. The company plans more original productions on the African continent (vice president of international originals, Erik Barmack). The platform wants to be a place where local content creators can tell their stories to a global audience.”
We hope this series will “change the game for every artist on this continent”, as said by Pearl Thusi.
