A huge congratulations to Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage. The singer, songwriter, performer and actress made history. She became the first solo woman to win Best African Act at the MTV EMAs.
The awards were held in Bilbao, Spain. The Bizkaia Arena (Bilbao Exhibition Centre) in Barakaldo hosted the star studded event. Tiwa was announced as the Best African Act on Sunday November 4th. Other nominees for the award included: Fellow countryman Davido; South African artists Destruction Boyz and Shekinah; Kenya’s Nyashinnski and Fally Ipupa from DRC.
Speaking on her historic win, Tiwa attributed her success to her supportive fans. No other female has won the award since the category’s inception 13 years ago
The Best African Act category was introduced to the awards in 2005. It was added as a mission to promote cultural integrations and enhance musical alliances. Judging by all the international buzz on Tiwa’s win, that mission was accomplished.
Well done Tiwa.
