No matter where in the world you go, the name Nelson Mandela is synonymous with philanthropy. One of Mandela’s many philanthropic passions was ending poverty. He’s been quoted saying ‘Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings’. Therefore, it’s only fitting that in celebration of 100 years since his birth, Global Poverty Project is hosting the “Mandela 100 Global Citizen Festival” in South Africa.
How and where it started
The Global Poverty Project was launched in 2008. Their vision is to end extreme poverty worldwide within a generation (by 2030). They’ve built a global movement for change through different campaigns and events. One of their biggest events is the Global Citizen Festival. It’s an annual music festival which started in New York in 2012. This year, the festival is still taking place in New York on the 29th of September. There will be performances by artists such as Cardi B, Janet Jackson and John Legend.
Mandela 100 Global Citizen Festival
In conjunction with the festival in New York, the Mandela 100 festival is being held in Johannesburg, South Africa. It will take place on the 2nd of December at the FNB stadium. 30% of the tickets were up for sale but ticket sales have closed. Proceeds from ticket sales go towards support for their other campaigns. 70% of tickets are given away to Global Citizens who take action on the Global Citizen platform or any of their partnerships.

Tickets are available for residents of South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland.
Performing artists include: Beyoncé, Wizkid, Ed Sheeran just to name a few. Most importantly, all artists donate their time and talents to Global Citizen for free. Costs towards putting the event together are covered by partnering companies. The goal in South Africa is to get $1 billion in funds committed to gender equality, clean water, access to healthcare, food and nutrition, and education.
