Ivorian Tidjane Thiam elected banker of the year by Euromoney
The Ivorian Tidjane Thiam, Chief Executive Officer of Credit Suisse, was awarded the title of “Banker of the Year” on Wednesday, July 11 in London, at the “Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2018” ceremony.
This award obtained by Tidjane rewards his efforts in the restructuring of Credit Suisse. He was rewarded for redesigning the bank’s strategy, and its return to profitability over the past 3 years. Under his leadership, Credit Suisse was named best investment bank in emerging markets.
Tidjane Thiam: an outstanding banker
Born in Abidjan in 1962, Tidjane Thiam started his career in Paris after graduating from the “Ecole Polytechnique”,the “Ecole des Mines”, and an MBA from Insead. He began his career at McKinsey as a management consultant (1986 -1994). He returned to Côte d’Ivoire where he was appointed Director General of the National Bureau of Technical Studies and Development, and then Minister of Planning and Development.
In 2002, he was appointed executive director of the Aviva insurance group, where he remained until 2007, to join the British insurer Prudential PLC. He became CEO of Prudential in 2009, becoming the first African to run a company listed on the FTSE 100.
In 2015, Thiam was appointed Managing Director of Swiss Investment Bank and Financial Services Company, Credit Suisse Group AG. He has been at Credit Suisse since then.
