Beyoncé and JAY-Z’s On the Run II Poster inspired by Senegalese movie “Touki Bouki”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are going on tour this summer, for the On the Run Tour II, and the main poster is inspired by Senegalese Djibril Diop Mambéty’s 1973 movie “Touki Bouki”.

The On the Run II Poster shows Beyonce and Jay-Z riding a motorbike trimmed with a bull’s skull. This is a reference to a scene from the 1973 Senegalese film Touki Bouki, which pictures main characters Mory and Anta journeying on Mory’s motorbike which is embellished with bull horns.”

The 1973 Senegalese motion picture was written and directed by Djibril Diop Mambéty in Wolof, a native language of Senegal. The story follows a young couple from Dakar, Senegal’s capital, who steal and scheme to acquire the money to travel to Paris, their dream city. The leading pair is reminiscent of Bonny and Clyde, on the run.

Touki Bouki, which is in senegalese Wolof language, premiered at Cannes in 1973. Made like a documentary, this film depicts urban grimace and traditional rituals. This production was crowned at the end of the prize of international criticism in Cannes. In 2008, Touki Bouki was again honored, when the Martin Scorsese Foundation, World Cinema Project, decided to restore it.
