In Lomé, as in many West African cities, the sorting of garbage almost does not exist. Africa Global Recycling, is a Togolese company that has decided to transform waste into reusable products.
For the time being, the only answer to the question of waste management is landfill or landfills. Launched by Edem d’Almeida in 2013, the challenge of Africa Global Recycling (AGR), is to transform the use of waste in Lomé. The company wants to give another value to waste.
How it works ?
AGR receives about 100 tonnes of waste each month in its warehouse in Lomé. The company has about 50 clients, industrialists, schools and public administrations, offering a comprehensive solution for the management of their recyclable waste.
The waste is not only sorted, but then sold to companies which subsequently transform it into various products (cartons, books, irrigation pipes, agricultural tarps, etc.). A portion of the proceeds of the sale is donated to the customer from whom AGR has removed the waste.
A promising solution
Since the creation of AGR, nearly one million euros have already been donated to its client companies. This sorting system at the source reduces the amount of waste dumped into landfills.
In the warehouse of 600 m2, forty-five types of recyclable waste pass into the hands of 20 employees.
Employees come from different backgrounds. We find those who have never been to school, and yet find themselves managing teams. The company plans to hire between five and ten new employees by the end of the year.
